Thai Students and their Teachers

All of the students at my school took part in the annual Wai Khru Ceremony today. The students presented their teachers with flowers and said “thank you” to them for giving them knowledge. In return, the teachers gave them a blessing which the students believe will give them good luck for the coming academic year. The flowers given to the teachers are symbolic

Three Students Murdered by Border Patrol Policeman Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand.

Back on the 20th of February I wrote a post called, When Will the Students Killing and Fighting Stop . It was about the imbecile vocational students and their feud that continues to kill some of them, and this I could not care about. But it is the innocent people caught in the crossfire that saddens me and angers me that the Thai government and police are just not doing enough to stop these tools.

Thai Sport Day Shows, Isaan Thailand.

One thing from my old school Assumption College here in Ubon Ratchathani, that was always hard to get my head around were some of the costumes on certain days. For a Catholic school I am sure that some Saints would be rolling over in their graves if they attended one of our special days. I think that it is all harmless, to a point.

A Move is as Good as a Holiday, Isaan Thailand.

If you have read this blog before you know that I teach in Thailand, for years I worked at a private school called Assumption College but recently shifted to a government run school. The differences aren’t a lot when you look at the academic side, the students are pretty well the same. There are students that are very competent in English, your middle of the road and then the students who understand next to nothing.

Thai Censors Don’t Like Teenagers Kissing

Sometimes I think that the Thai Censor board have their priorities all wrong. Every night, in the Thai soap operas, we get scenes of men hitting and even raping women and then finally marrying them as if that made it alright. But, according to the Bangkok Post this morning, a brief shot of two teenagers, who are seen in a movie trailer about to kiss, is too immoral for our youth to watch

Thai Sport Parade Isaan Thailand 2010

Well I am going way back to the 3rd of December when we had our sport day, students were dressed up for the parade along Ubon Ratchathani’s main road, walking about 2klms back to the school. The team deemed with the best parade win a trophy for their trouble and every year the outfits are beautiful to bizarre. This year I didn’t see any really wrong (an outfit not suitable for a student) outfits for the parade, but back at the school for the cheer shows a few turned up as per usual

Exams, Cheating, Paperwork and No Time, Isaan Thailand.

I can truthfully say, thank bloody hell that the exams are over as of today and that means no kids until we return on the 26th of October. I do have to go on an English camp next week for three days, thankfully there are six of us foreign teachers going, so I will be able to relax in the evening with a few coldies and stories for sure. The last two days have been painful, well the first day of exams was excruciating you could say. On Wednesday I had to proctor or invigilate year 12 students (18 year olds)

Thai Education System Needs Reform, Thailand.

I want to thank my good mate Vern, over at Thaipulse.com for sending me this link. I hadn’t read this story because my computer gave up the go yesterday and I had to put in a new power source this afternoon and now I am back to normal again. If you are a long time reader then you know what I do here in Thailand, a teacher at a private school. I have had a few ups and downs along the way and complained about the Thai school system that I still have so much trouble getting my head around things at times

Respect for Thai Teachers Ceremony

The most important event to be held at Sriwittayapaknam School is the annual Wai Kru Ceremony. Like other schools around the country this always takes place towards the start of the new academic year and always on a Thursday. The students pay respect to their teachers by presenting them with flowers and going down onto the floor to do a krab which is the most respectful way to show respect. The students hope to gain merit and good fortune for the coming year
