Reading the papers online today and “ the big ” story is of some Thai students who dressed up in Nazi uniforms for their sports day. In Thailand, sport days are huge. They take precedence over academics, well actually everything else takes precedence over learning, competitions, dancing, watching some touts pitch a promotion for some company selling products laced full of sugar, but this is Thailand.
I was going to blog on something else tonight but after reading an excellent column written in The Bangkok Post by Sanitsuda Ekachai, an assistant editor there. It is another article where a Thai person points out just one of the many things wrong with Thailand’s education system. Thais have written about it for so long but it never gets fixed and below is one of the things that disgusts me. The article below is in its entirety and the link to the paper is here at, Education Ministry is the problem! I will print in the full form as often the links go dead from this paper, I don’t know why

The other day I was sitting in my office when an English teacher from primary 6 dropped in to see me. She has asked me to check some tests for her. Not tests she had compiled, but tests from NIETS (The National Institute of Educational Testing Service). Each year students in primary 6 and also secondary 9 and 12 have to do these national tests in a range of subjects
Today I was reading another very well written column in The Bangkok Post about Thai education. I don’t claim to be a qualified teacher, never have and never will as I do not have a degree in education. I like many other foreign nationals are like this, with degrees in other fields, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certificates and so on. Many of us may not be a perfect teacher, and we make mistakes, but I am sure even super teachers do, but I do hope that the majority of us foreign teachers try their best for the kids they are meant to be educating
