Tha Kha Floating Market

The most popular floating market in Thailand for tourists is undoubtedly at Damnoen Saduak. However, if you want to avoid the bus loads of tourists on a very well worn trail then I suggest that you head out to Tha Kha Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำท่าคา). This market is a short distance away in Samut Songkhram Province [ MAP ]. I was using a homestay at Amphawa Floating Market as my base and it only took me about 15 minutes to drive here.

Ban Rak Amphawa Homestay

Ban Rak Amphawa Homestay - Amphawa Home of Love Most people go to Amphawa Floating Market in Samut Songkhram as an easy day trip from Bangkok. It is only about 90 minutes away. I have done it several times myself. However, the popularity of homestays in recent years has seen a boom in business in this once sleepy town.

Trip to the Beach in Bangkok

Boat Ride to the Seaside in Bangkok People often ask where is the nearest beach to Bangkok. Usually I reply Bangsaen and Pattaya to the East or Cha-am and Hua Hin to the South. However, the answer is nearer than expected as Bangkok itself has its own coastline.

Thailand : Awash with Rumours.

Thailand has two main English language newspapers, the Nation and the Bangkok Post. This week both papers have carried stories about the spread of swine flu to Thailand and some shipping containers believed to contain human remains that are thought to be on the sea bed in the Gulf of Thailand. Both papers have taken [...]

Thai Garden:Weekly Update (4)

Developing my Thai garden is great past time, but like all gardeners I like to be able to enjoy the fruits of my labours and also to see what progress I have made. Being able to judge progress is not always easy but fortunately for me I also like photography so I have been [...]

Thai Rice

The Thai word for eat is “ghin khao” which translates literally to “eat rice.” Thai rice is the largest of Thailand’s exports, which also makes the country the worlds largest rice exporter, in fact Thai rice exports were expected to top 10 million tons in 2008.
So why is Thai rice so popular?
Thai rice [...]

[Click on each image for a larger version.]
1. The Northern Economic Corridor — Laos’ national Route 3, shown here under construction in late 2006, is the final stretch of what is sometimes called the Singapore-to-London Highway. Funded by loans from the Asian Development Bank and the governments of China and Thailand, Route 3 is part [...]

Lese majeste under a new Thaksin government

In a long comment posted today Portman makes a thought-provoking point:
One of the first acts of new Thaksin government might be to block New Mandala and arrest those in Thailand who have posted articles deemed disrespectful of the monarchy and declare those outside the country persona non grata.

I would be interested to hear New Mandala [...]

….And the Winner is….

Well done Dannyboy, clear winner in yesterdays challenge, despite all the whingeing. Iced coffee is easy to make (basically expresso, how you like it in a cup, poured over lots of ice), so here is how to make a Thai iced tea, useful for those long, lazy summers in UK (ha ha).
In Thailand [...]

Thai SIM Card -Buy in Thailand.

Be warned purchasing a Thai Sim card before you arrive in Thailand can be an expensive business. Research by myself suggests that you could pay as much as £35 in the UK or $35 in the USA for something that can cost as low as £2 or $3 in Thailand.
If you have an unlocked [...]

Expat Thailand: Breaking Some Myths About Living in Thailand.

Expats around the world are always faced with obstacles to overcome as they settle into their adopted country. Expats choosing to live in Thailand are no different. However a lot of these so called obstacles are more myth than fact. Here are five examples of such Thailand myths and my observations on them:

Visa and Immigration [...]

Upcoming piece from Nick Nostitz

Later today New Mandala will provide a big report from photo-journalist Nick Nostitz about the recent wave of Red Shirt protests in Bangkok and elsewhere.  He was on the frontlines during many of the major clashes.  Readers who have yet to taste Nick’s style of reporting will find his New Mandala photo essay from last [...]

Expat Thailand: Making Sense of Thai Visa Rules.

This week I have taken the opportunity to update some early posts that are of interest to Expats or potential expatriates to Thailand. Rules and circumstances in a host country change from time to time so today I want to consolidate and update information on Thai Visas. This will of course be of [...]
