STRONG IMAGES / CONTENIDO FUERTE Once a year and for about two weeks people evoke spirits and perform strange acts of piercing themselves to clean their bodies to show their devotion to the gods, they parade around town. This is a Chinese festival but celebrated only in Phuket, Thailand during the months of September/October.
Over the years I have seen some really great Thai festivals. This is a list of my Top 10 favourites in no particular order. Loy Krathong Festival (1) As the full moon of the twelfth lunar month (usually in mid-November) lights up the night sky, throughout the Thai kingdom, hundreds of thousands of ornately-decorated krathong or traditional banana leaf floats are set adrift in rivers and waterways in a spell-binding ritual called “Loy Krathong” – the ‘festival of lights”.

Imprinted Candles as Candle Parade In remote Ubon, Thailand’s eastern most province, tourists are usually rarer than a vote for the Democrat Party and the laid back locals seems to like it this way. The wilderness province even boasts Thailand’s most spectacular natural site yet is happy not to tell anyone about it. However once a year this changes as the rains comes down. Ubon’s main claim to fame is its traditional Candle Festival

Fine food enthusiasts in Bangkok have an opportunity this weekend to participate in the “International TASTE 2011 Amazing Thailand”. This is taking place at Parc Paragon which is the area in front of Siam Paragon. About 30 of the best restaurants in Thailand have been selected to present their signature dishes from various national cuisines such as Thai, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Italian and American.

Here in Ubon Ratchathani we have just had the Lenten Candle Festival, and if you look above this is the biggest and best candle that was on display, well it wasn’t but it was something different and Noot liked it. She took all the pictures that you will see in this post as I did not go. There are too many people for me and I get too frustrated

One of the biggest and most beautiful festivals in Thailand is the Candle Procession which marks the start of the Buddhist Lent. In Thai this is called Khao Phansa which is the day after the full moon in July. Traditionally during this period, Thai Buddhists take part in parades to their local temples where they offer basic essentials and candles to the monks. This year, I attended the Candle Procession in Ubon Ratchathani, which is in the Northeast of Thailand.

Here in Ubon Ratchathani we have the Lenten Candle Festival about to start. Each year at the start of the Buddhist Lent we have the largest parade of candle floats made by temples right down to small villages. It is Ubon’s busiest time of the year and the foreign population skyrockets and you can play spot the Thai instead of foreigner, okay there aren’t that many but there is a large influx of tourists. Below are pictures of my local temple’s candle float, the temple is about 400mtrs from my house.
