The rallies are seen as the biggest threat yet to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. Protesters listened to speeches and music over loudspeakers while waiting for leaders to arrive in trucks that would be turned into makeshift stages. Security forces guarded state buildings after government warnings of arson and bombings. Protesters say authorities are trying to fan public fears to justify a potential crackdown. The systems were used to safely recover damaged or troubled fighter aircraft returning from their missions in Southeast Asia. The Arresting Systems were kept in a constant state of readiness.
